I had a vague impulse to make my own paczki (locally pronounced poonch-key) … but then sanity returned and I picked up a half dozen from the arguably best paczki bakery in town.
I brought home 2 blueberry, 2 apple, 1 raspberry and 1 lemon calorie-filled treats. It was hard to keep from eating them as soon as I got home but I wanted at least ONE to eat today. ๐
PS: I didn’t make it.
Are they like filled donuts?
Yes, egg yolk rich, fried and filled with one of a half dozen or so choices at Polish bakeries in town. Pastry cream and the traditional prune filling as well as the ones I mentioned already.
Shrove Tuesday is also called Pancake Tuesday if you’re not into paczki. ๐
Sounds real good except for the prune part
Dried plums or even fresh plums are cooked down into a wonderfully tasty filling. It’s just not my personal favourite. My brother, SIL and nephew like it the best and get a whole dozen of it when they order their box(es).
It’s called “Fat Thursday” in Poland actually! Of course paczki are so delicious! (I avoid making them… luckily there are not enough Poles to have Polish bakeries or shops, so I save some cm in my waist every year if I don’t fry them on my own).
There are a couple of different pre-Lenten celebration days depending on the locale. I’ve always celebrated the Shrove Tuesday-Ash Wednesday one.
I’ve seen this treat bounce around my Facebook over the last week. They really do look scrumptious!
It’s a seasonal indulgence. ๐
They look very temptingโฆI can see why they didn’t last. Happy Valentine’s Day.
Happy Valentine’s Day to you too.
Donuts are best on the same day they’re made. 5-10 sec in the microwave on defrost helps refresh them a bit but they’re not at their optimal state. Another reason you don’t want them sitting around.
Or, at least, that’s my justification. ๐
